The UN has stated that there are in excess of five thousand religions practiced in the world today. They were referring to the many ORGANIZED known religions. Whats more true is that, its probable that no two people on earth carry exactly the same beliefs; so, a more accurate count would be that there are well in excess of six billion religions in the world today. This makes any analysis of religion into a difficult endeavor. If its a course in Theology, the problem revolves around “which theology”. Two of the four ways we classify religions is either problematically or Theistically. Problematically

One of the methods to be discussed is: problematic classification. The “problems” that this means is addressing are the “three primary problems of life” how to get along with the physical world, how to get along with each other, and how to get to know ourselves so that we can make sense of it all. Although not original to him, this method has been well explained by Doctor Huston Smith, a world leader in religious studies. Doctor Smith refers to these three problem areas as the natural, the social, and the psychological. What he noticed was that some religions lean more towards one of these 3 areas than they do to the other two. Dr. Smith appears to think that which area a religion addresses is most often tied to the physical environment where the religion originated and grew, as well as the cultural standards in which it developed.

The social religions are most prolifically represented by the eastern religions. (Confucian, Taoist, et cetera). In these faiths, adherents tend to be most concerned with how people get along with each other. They are usually so attuned to this aspect of life that theyre occasionally called ethical systems instead of religions.

Things To Think About

The “three great problems of life” have been espoused by several of the great philosophers long before Dr. Huston Smith so eloquently framed them as a classification model for religion.
